About the maker

Nora McQuaid is the designer and maker behind Aileach Moon.

Her path to designer/maker was a winding one, until, with a giant leap of faith, steely determination and an insatiable passion for hands-on making, she changed career, launched Aileach Moon and now makes full time.

A self-taught maker, she secured a short internship at the fabulous Vanilla Ink Studios in Glasgow and was accepted onto the Getting Started Programme delivered by the prestigious Goldsmith’s Centre in London. She has availed of specialist training from master craftsmen. A member of various arts organisations, she values the protection of heritage making and its positive cultural, societal and environmental impacts.

Inspiration

She takes inspiration from the ubiquitous nature of emotion, an examination of female archetypes and female representation in art and society. Her design process begins with journalling and sketching. Lino-cutting and printmaking often form a backdrop to a collection and allow space for an idea to develop before individual pieces are born. Her process continues through connection with the materials during fabrication and wax carving.

Currently based in Derry, Northern Ireland, she makes one-of-a-kind pieces, small collections and works to commission using recycled precious metals.

I am so grateful to all in the jewellery community who have facilitated and encouraged my development. They have helped pave my path.

I would encourage anyone who is curious about a career in the industry to contact the likes of the Goldsmith’s Centre for information on apprenticeships and training routes and I am always happy to signpost for someone who is beginning their journey.
